Sweet Sixteen ♥

we have a sixteen year old in the house again

her Daddy and I had decided with our first daughter to give them a hope chest at age 16
it's an old-fashioned idea, something the world has kind of forgotten, hope chests
more and more you see of the world young adults getting brand new cars or new to them cars for their 16th birthday and popular among Christians are these "promise" rings - faith rings to wear - but I don't like to jump on the worldly or popular band wagons, give me good old traditional, practical gifts that can be treasured and used forever.

Our oldest daughter had her hope chest made by her Daddy - a very special item, especially now in his absence from this earth. He had planned on making one for each of his three girls - a piece of furniture that could be treasured and made useful throughout her life and handed down to a child of her own.

Oldest brother offered to make hope chests for the two remaining girls and even though that would have been a welcome idea, the Lord placed it on my heart that I had two hope chests to hand down that would be meaningful to the girls.

so yesterday the family gave the new 16 year old some practical hope chest gifts to store in her "new to her" hope chest - this chest, originally bought in 1963 began with her Daddy's, mom - full to the brim it was in 1964 when she married Grandpa - with sheets, pillowcases, flour sack towels all embroidered with love - I typed up a note to our girl, shared with her the story of its journey thus far and told her that it was now hers. we had fun with her presents - she received a cookbook, handwritten recipes, dish towels, toothpicks, a pizza cutter, measuring cups and even a new toilet plunger, which evoked big laughs!

this daughter is content to be around for quite a while and that makes my heart happy, I'm in no rush to say good-bye to her - she still has much growing up and maturing to do. doing it here with her family is how it is to be.
